Direct Instruction method
Direct Instruction (DI) is a defined, free of misinterpretation, teacher-led method based on clear key principles. It is believed that every child can learn and improve academically at their own pace when presented with best teaching and materials. In other words, DI proves that students, if properly taught, can learn. Supported by decades of research, this method of teaching reading, writing, spelling and math has demonstrated to deliver results superior to other methods of instruction. All DI programs have been revised and field tested prior to publishing. In other words, the programs our students receive have already proven to work.
Originally developed by Siegfried Engelmann, the program underwent rigorous testing, having demonstrated its superiority to other intervention programs. Since then, the programs have been in wide use in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.
Our Direct Instruction programs are typically implemented 1-on-1. Your child’s tutor ensures mastery of the concept and only moves forward if full grasp of material is achieved. Our students make best progress if this kind of intervention is used.

What is Direct Instruction?
Direct Instruction is a powerful intervention tool. It is based on the notion that clearly cut out lessons, free of misrepresentation of material, can greatly improve student success.
Tutors deliver lessons in carefully planned increments. Students are only moving forward if full mastery of material is achieved.
DI graduates have consistently been able to catch up or surpass their peers.
FAQ
Direct Instruction offers a highly effective alternative for students who struggle in traditional classrooms. Its clear routines, small steps, and constant reinforcement reduce confusion and anxiety, making learning more accessible. It’s especially beneficial for students with learning differences, attention challenges, or gaps in foundational skills.
We use continuous, data-driven assessments to monitor student progress in real time. Each student’s growth is tracked through structured evaluations, teacher observations, and regular feedback loops. This allows us to adjust instruction quickly and support students as they progress through the learning tiers.
Our Direct Instruction program provides targeted support in areas such as decoding, reading comprehension, numeration, and math problem-solving. Lessons are delivered in small groups or 1:1 settings, ensuring students receive the repetition, guidance, and reinforcement they need to build confidence and competency.
At Read Write Think’s School, we use structured, evidence-based methods focused on explicit teaching, scripted lessons, and step-by-step skill-building. This approach ensures students master each concept before moving forward, especially in foundational subjects like reading, spelling, and math.
We welcome high schoolers and parallel our instruction to their school learning. We teach planning, chunking, organization, and time planning on top of academic material to help their learning. We offer tutoring in every high school subject of the Ontario curriculum.
We offer help with all core subjects of the Ontario curriculum with focus on math and English. Our belief is that a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy is a driving force of academic success. We emphasize solid executive functioning skills, such as time planning and organization to propel academics.
Any student who benefits from explicit, teacher-led instruction and mastery tests to ensure retention could be offered DI placement. In fact, all our young readers learn to read using the Reading Mastery approach, regardless of their entry level.
During an initial assessment of skills, our team tries to assess the gap in learning. Students who have a gap wider than one year would typically benefit from DI.
Before we agree on programming, we assess your child and have an interview with the parents. That gives our team a very good understanding of a student’s needs. Following that, we put a learning plan together where we outline the recommended programs. Programming can change based on your child’s performance or goals.
A short amount of brief, manageable homework is assigned to promote independent study skills and work on planning and organization. Work assigned for home study is below the student’s level and intended for autonomous study, free of parental involvement.
Online tutoring is a safe, convenient, and time-saving mode of learning. Many students benefit from online learning these days. This option can be confirmed after the assessment of skills. Studying in the comfort of your own home with a knowledgeable, warm educator may become a great option for your child if they can focus well and have solid learning skills.
You need a stable internet connection, printer, and a laptop. The tutor forwards materials well before the class to allow time to print and prepare. A student logs into a class on a Microsoft Team platform and instruction begins.
Enrollment is weekly. You could choose to participate in our programs for one week or the whole duration of the summer.
Each class lasts three hours and consists of reading, writing and math. Each student is placed in accordance with their current level of achievement and not their grade. That approach ensures that each student benefits from the three layers of instruction.
Each course lasts four full weeks, five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 am till 12:30 pm.

We work with struggling students, those who need some help in core curriculum, and nourish gifted minds that need some extra challenge. The difference is in the approach and programming.
Proper communication between school and tutors is essential. Our learning specialists write on-going progress reports that we encourage you to share with your child’s teachers. If a parent wishes, regular communication between your child’s teacher and our learning specialist could be established. In most cases it is crucial in developing and implementing a learning plan that will help your child progress at school.
