I highly recommend the Read Write Think program to anyone whose kid needs a little extra boost or serious help with their reading and writing. Our son didn't know how to read or write when he started Grade 1 (although he attended SK) and was feeling stressed about it. After a little online search we were lucky enough to find Julia, the owner of the Read Write Think program, who came to our house and did a quick assessment of our son. Julia informed us that he would catch up to his classmates by the end of the the school year, which he did much earlier.Julia paired us up with Maddie - a wonderful, patient, experienced and fun teacher who my son loves a lot. Maddie came to our house once a week for an hour and did a great job keeping our son engaged and interested, which was not an easy feat at times :).The materials the program provides are also exceptional and at the same fun (some stories made me laugh out loud).Julia, Maddie and the whole Read Write Think program are amazing! And we will continue with their services next year as well.

As a parent, my kids' learning is very important to me. Even at their young age, I know how important it is to support their needs at school and enhance it at home. That's why I'm happy to have found Read Write Think because their reading, writing, and language & spelling programs have really helped not just my kids' grades, but more importantly, their attitude towards learning through mastery of these core skills.

Skills Assessment

Take advantage of our free academic and learning skills assessment offered to every student. The goal of the assessment is to determine your child’s current academic level and learning habits. We offer placement into the right program to best meet your child’s learning needs.

Direct Instruction method

Direct Instruction (DI) is a defined, free of misinterpretation, teacher-led method based on clear key principles. It is believed that every child can learn and improve academically at their own pace when presented with best teaching and materials. In other words, DI proves that students, if properly taught, can learn. Supported by decades of research, this method of teaching reading, writing, spelling and math has demonstrated to deliver results superior to other methods of instruction. All DI programs have been revised and field tested prior to publishing. In other words, the programs our students receive have already proven to work.

Originally developed by Siegfried Engelmann, the program underwent rigorous testing, having demonstrated its superiority to other intervention programs. Since then, the programs have been in wide use in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.

Our Direct Instruction programs are typically implemented 1-on-1. Your child’s tutor ensures mastery of the concept and only moves forward if full grasp of material is achieved. Our students make best progress if this kind of intervention is used.

Direct instruction method

What is Direct Instruction?

Direct Instruction is a powerful intervention tool. It is based on the notion that clearly cut out lessons, free of misrepresentation of material, can greatly improve student success.

Tutors deliver lessons in carefully planned increments. Students are only moving forward if full mastery of material is achieved.

DI graduates have consistently been able to catch up or surpass their peers.

Reading

Our younger students learn phonics and early reading skills. Lessons are based on sounds presentation and followed by students’ independent reading. Remedial reading and comprehension for struggling older readers.

Writing

Move from constructing a basic sentence to writing a full paragraph. Extend the skills to writing a multi-paragraph story. Learn about persuasive, narrative, descriptive and expository writing. Arguments and position papers.

Language

Learn the basic vocabulary, concepts and sentence forms used in a typical classroom through highly systematic and explicit programs. Lessons focus around word knowledge, common information, classification and problem solving.

Spelling

Become a proficient speller through learning about roots, prefixes, suffixes and base words. Use the skill of memorization and letter-sound correspondence while evolving into an expert speller.

Math

Understand, practise, reach mastery and accelerate. Using these principles, our students strengthen their math and logic skills. They become able to transfer the skills beyond the math curriculum and apply them into real life.

FAQ

What is your overall approach for test readiness?

We make sure students are academically ready for test taking and combine test taking skills with enhancing general knowledge. We offer timed mock tests, along with hints and prompts for better outcomes.

I have great academic skills. Do I need to take test prep?

Even students with an overall advanced academic performance need skills and techniques to be test ready. We work on every skill required assessed by the test and offer mock testing all the way throughout the program.

How do you align the programs with my child’s needs?

When we put together a program, we keep your child’s learning profile in mind. We have years of expertise to help you find your best program for each subject.

How do you determine the approach my child needs?

Struggling students benefit from 1-on-1 learning with a Direct Instruction tutor and traditional learners could be placed in a small group. Some students choose to be only guided by an educational specialist and to learn with a parent.

Do you offer homeschooling groups and courses?

Your homeschooler is welcome to join any program we have. You could choose to sign up for group or 1-to-1 classes, depending on your child’s needs and your flexibility.

How often are camp courses offered?

Our sessions take place in the summer, winter and spring break. Daily courses on the same topics are offered as workshops on school PA days.

Which topics do you cover in your camps?

Our camps are of academic nature. They offer crash course in many topics of writing, literacy, oral presentations, learning skills and more. Students leave the course with a binder and a toolbox of ready to use skills.

What is the duration of your camps?

Our camp programs consist of 10 hours of instruction in total and last five consecutive days.

I have an upcoming parent-teacher interview night. My child has been identified with some learning challenges and IPRC process is on its way. How could you help?

We can accompany you to the meeting and help you advocate for your child. Communication between all parties involved cannot be overestimated in helping your child succeed.

My child has a psycho-educational assessment and there is an IEP in place at his or her school. Should I bring it to the assessment?

Definitely. Any information you have about your child will help us put a proper learning plan in place. Additionally, it will help us save time in getting to know your child’s strengths and needs.

How do you determine my child’s placement into a specific program?

We will meet with your child for an academic assessment aligned with Ontario school expectations. Following that, we will assess which DI program and level is best suited to the student’s current level.

Do you only see children with learning difficulties or gifted children, too?

We work with struggling students, those who need some help in core curriculum, and nourish gifted minds that need some extra challenge.  The difference is in the approach and programming.

I want my child’s school to know that he or she is getting help. How can that happen?

Proper communication between school and tutors is essential. Our learning specialists write on-going progress reports that we encourage you to share with your child’s teachers. If a parent wishes, regular communication between your child’s teacher and our learning specialist could be established. In most cases it is crucial in developing and implementing a learning plan that will help your child progress at school.
