Who we are
We are a team of educators in Vaughan, Ontario who specialize in children who learn differently. We have years of expertise catering individualized instruction to struggling students. A vast majority of them will respond well to a curriculum tailored specifically to their needs. We have taught special education for children diagnosed with learning disabilities, attention deficit, autism spectrum, behavioural and emotional difficulties, just to name a few.
All our special education classes take place 1:1 at our centre conveniently located in Vaughan. Most of our classes are conducted in person and some of them take place online, provided the student benefits from this mode of instruction.
What we do differently
Our approach to special education is rooted in Direct Instruction methods. This model of instruction is based on a simple idea of teacher-led learning. In other words, if a student did not learn, the teacher did not teach properly.
With 1:1 intervention, it is easy and practical to take an approach that is most beneficial.
Our team is highly trained in recognizing and validating the difficulties struggling children face in their everyday academic life. Our classes offer a professional, expert, yet a warm and compassionate approach to educating students.

Programs
We offer reading, writing, spelling, and math intervention programs. Each child turning to our services goes through the initial assessment where the academic director, along with the parents and the student, discuss and put together a program best suited to your child’s needs. Programs get revised frequently based on a student’s interaction, learning specialist’s feedback, changing needs and other factors that might come into play.

Initial assessment and re-assessment of skills
The initial assessment consists of two parts. First, a student is being assessed in accordance with the school system expectations. The academic director and the parents try to determine the gap compared with the Ontario system of education. Once that has been established, the next step is to place a child into an intervention program. Proper assessment and placement might take longer than only one session. After that, a learning plan is drawn and implemented.
Re-assessment takes place around every three months. Sometimes, it happens more often if there is a change in programs or an upcoming school meeting.

School Communication
School communication is important. Parents, teachers, psychologists, occupational and speech therapists, as well as other educators should all be involved in helping a child succeed. RWT learning specialists produce progress reports and establish regular communication between all parties. We encourage all sides to partner up in order to share, implement, provide and use each other’s feedback and support.

Parents
Parents have always possessed intuitive and innate knowledge of their children. We gather all the information we can get from the parents during the initial assessment. Parents also make a final decision whether they want to take the educational path presented to them or not. During the course of the program implementation, RWT team shares observations of learning with parents on a weekly basis.
We guide parents how to turn the process of learning into a lifetime of an enjoyable, meaningful process. We have often witnessed a change in attitude to learning in both younger children and teenagers once the positivity is established and maintained.
